Nobody restocked a warehouse between morning and afternoon. That is not how a Thursday works, which means the word sold out was doing something other than describing stock.
Did the GTA 6 DualSense actually sell out?
Nobody outside Sony and the retailers can say, and the evidence points somewhere less dramatic. What is solidly reported is that PlayStation Direct buckled on the 10 September opening, with queues running past an hour and checkouts that failed before payment, described firsthand by reporters at two outlets. The white edition showed sold out at one large retailer roughly a minute after a Kotaku reporter completed a purchase there, and the same listing was taking orders again that afternoon. Meanwhile the controller was still in stock at two other retailers around 10:30 Eastern, with cart errors. No warehouse was restocked in that window. That pattern is inventory flags and cart holds moving under load rather than a stock level, and from outside a storefront there is no way to tell the two apart. The black edition is a separate question that cannot be answered at all, because the only shop selling it was not functioning for a good part of the first hour.
What is solid: PlayStation Direct did not work
Kotaku's reporter described a queue running past an hour from the 10am Eastern opening, error screens, and a checkout that threw him to an error page before he could pay. TheGamer's writer was in the same queue and put it plainly: it was over an hour long when he first joined. GodisaGeek reported the same shape of morning, queues over an hour and orders that would not complete.
That is three outlets describing the same morning, two of them firsthand accounts from people who stood in the queue themselves. Sony has said nothing about it, so it is not confirmed by Sony, but firsthand reporting from independent newsrooms is about as solid as this gets before a company comments.
The bet from last week, graded honestly
The prediction here was that the black edition would go first because it has a single door, PlayStation Direct in the ten countries where Sony runs it. Half of that cannot be graded, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
When the only door does not open, you cannot tell whether the room behind it is empty or full. PS Direct was not functioning as a shop for a good part of that first hour. So nobody outside Sony knows whether the black controller sold through or simply could not be bought, and a headline that looks like a correct prediction is not the same thing as one.
Why a sold out banner is not a stock level
The sold out flag at Best Buy is one reporter's own checkout at one store at one minute, which is exactly how far it can be trusted. Around 10:30 Eastern the white edition was still available at two other large retailers, with cart errors, relayed through a deals account rather than observed directly. By the afternoon the first retailer was taking orders again, per a where-to-buy piece.
This shape appeared with this same game in June. When pre-orders for GTA 6 itself opened, Amazon briefly showed the standard edition as sold out, and TheGamer pointed out at the time that Amazon does this to ease traffic on large launches, while the game remained available nearly everywhere else. A disc that never actually sold out still turned up on eBay at $199 plus postage.
The resale market exists on one side only
Kotaku found listings at $195, with others at $150 and $130. Windows Report saw a spread from roughly $130 to $200, with a few approaching $300, and relayed that resellers had listings up before pre-orders even opened, meaning people selling something they did not have.
Every one of those is an asking price. Not one outlet reported a completed sale, and Kotaku said in its own piece that many of those listings likely will not sell. A search for a closed transaction figure before this was written turned up nothing. So the honest description is that the resale market for this pad exists on the listing side and is unmeasured on the buying side, and those are very different markets.
The last time this franchise flooded eBay
Same game, three months earlier. Game Rant looked at publicly available data on GTA 6 pre-order flips and found fewer than a dozen sold listings in the first 36 hours, sitting under a wall of $200 asking prices.
A limited controller is genuinely scarcer than a disc printed to order, so that is not a prediction. It is what a flooded eBay looked like the last time this franchise produced one, and it was mostly air. The bet, flagged as a bet, is that asking prices fall a long way before 19 November, with a restock as the likely reason. That rests on one precedent, so hold it loosely.
