Anything about GTA 6 Online that traces back to this courtroom is Rockstar defending a firing. That is a very different activity from Rockstar describing a game to you.
Will GTA 6 Online have 32 players?
Nobody knows what ships, and the filing everyone is quoting does not say. What is established is narrower. Rockstar's written submission to the Glasgow employment tribunal says other claimants in a Discord channel were candidly referencing game features, described as one of the most closely guarded secrets of the company, to discuss an online 32 player format which was highly confidential at that time. Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar's head of publishing, called employees sharing player numbers extraordinarily alarming. At minimum that tells you a 32 player format existed inside Rockstar at some point, because Rockstar told a judge it did. It does not tell you that 32 is what launches, or that the format still exists at all. Rockstar has announced nothing about an online mode for GTA 6: no name, no date, no player count. That silence is the only official position.
The number is not new, whatever the headlines say
At the interim relief hearing in January, Rockstar's filing said the dismissed workers had shared highly confidential information about an unannounced online service, including the specific number of online players planned for it, a material feature not yet revealed. Rockstar asked the judge to review that feature in private.
The documents were not under reporting restrictions, and the 32 player figure was reported publicly in January, including by GamesRadar. So what surfaced this week is the same fact, at the same tribunal, eight months later. That is worth knowing before treating it as a reveal.
How Rockstar's language changed between January and September
The January filing called the information highly confidential and commercially sensitive, which is already strong. The September filing goes to one of the most closely guarded secrets of the company, and the head of publishing adds extraordinarily alarming on top. That is an escalation in how Rockstar describes the same fact.
Why the language moved is unknown. It could be the lawyers deciding the number was already out, or a launch ten weeks away making secrecy cheaper to give up. Both are plausible and neither is established, so neither is asserted here.
Three words in the past tense
The January wording says planned for this service, present tense. The September wording says highly confidential at that time, past tense. That shift allows two readings: the number changed and 32 is no longer the plan, so it is safe to name, or a lawyer wrote at that time because that is how lawyers describe October 2025, and it means nothing.
The bet, flagged as a bet, is the lawyer. Tense in a legal filing is a poor leak, and reading a design change into it would be exactly the kind of overreach this site exists to avoid.
Why 32 is believable, and why that cuts both ways
Red Dead Online has run 32 players per free roam session since it launched in November 2018. GTA Online runs 30 on current consoles and PC, and held 16 per session when it launched in October 2013. So Rockstar's own history runs 16, then 30, then 32 in the most recent open world it built.
The number is credible because Rockstar has shipped it before. For exactly the same reason, it is the number a faker would pick. That is why a court filing matters more than a Discord screenshot: a screenshot can be typed, and a filing has a lawyer's name under it.
The thinner piece, and what development sounds like
GTA BOOM reports that earlier court documents included Discord messages in which the fired workers discussed the difficulty of organising large 32 player sessions. Those messages have not been published, so this is one outlet describing a document, and it is reported rather than confirmed.
If accurate, it fits a test rather than a promise. Developers finding a 32 player session hard to fill is what development sounds like, and it sits a long way from a launch specification. The hearing runs to 16 October, so more filings will be read out, and any repeat of the number will be there because a lawyer needs it.

Evidence tier for the existence of a 32 player format inside Rockstar: confirmed, from Rockstar's own filing as reported from the tribunal. For it being the launch specification: not established. For the Discord messages about organising 32 player sessions: reported, single outlet describing an unpublished document. The reading of the past tense is a bet. Rockstar has announced nothing about GTA 6 Online. See how this site grades evidence.
