GTA 6 Unlocks in 15 Waves. Rockstar Hasn't Confirmed One

6:54 launch times · PlayStation Store · preload By Updated

Rockstar has confirmed one thing about this launch: the date. Everything else in this story was pulled out of storefront listings by other people.

When does GTA 6 unlock in my region?

According to regional PlayStation Store pages, each region unlocks at midnight local time, which spreads the launch across 15 separate waves over 19 hours. New Zealand goes first at midnight NZDT, which is 11:00 UTC on 18 November. Australia follows two hours later, then Japan and Korea, then India. The large European wave covers 19 countries at once at midnight Central European Time, a full 12 hours behind New Zealand, with the UK and Ireland an hour after that. The United States and Canada share a single nationwide moment at 05:00 UTC, which is midnight Eastern and 18 hours behind New Zealand. Mexico and Central America close it out at 19 hours. Every one of those times is Sony's data rather than Rockstar's, read off store pages that Sony can edit at any point before launch. The only thing Rockstar has stated on the record is the date, 19 November, from a post in November last year.

Where this schedule actually came from

Not a leak and not a source. The fan site GTAVice.net went through 63 separate regional PlayStation Store pages, each of which shows a release timestamp on the GTA 6 listing, and compiled them. Eurogamer and Kotaku picked it up from there, and most of the coverage since traces back to that one piece of work.

That provenance is worth stating plainly because it changes the tier. What the store pages currently say is checkable by anyone. What happens on launch night is reported, since Sony or Rockstar can change a timestamp any time between now and November.

The single American timestamp is stranger than it looks

The United States and Canada get one moment rather than one per time zone, and that moment is midnight Eastern. Which means the country that thinks of itself as going last does not go last for everyone inside it. Midnight in New York is 9pm in Los Angeles, 8pm in Anchorage, and 7pm in Honolulu, all on 18 November.

So a Hawaii account is playing before the evening is over, a day earlier by the calendar, while an East Coast account waits for a date change. That is a consequence of a single timestamp rather than a decision anyone announced.

A time zone error that spread through the coverage

One large outlet put New Zealand's unlock at 8am New York time. That does not work. New Zealand's midnight on 19 November is 11:00 UTC on 18 November, and by mid November New York clocks have already gone back, putting the city on UTC minus five. Eleven minus five is six.

So the correct figure is 6am Eastern, not 8am. It is a small thing, but New Zealand is the whole hook of this story, and a two hour error at the front of it propagates into every plan built on top of it.

The 600 people who see the date first and get the game last

Sony's timestamp is one moment for all of New Zealand, and New Zealand has two time zones. The Chatham Islands sit around 800 km east of the South Island, house roughly 600 people, and run 45 minutes ahead of the mainland. It is one of only three places on Earth with a 45 minute offset, alongside Nepal and a stretch of Western Australia.

Which produces a genuinely odd result: the first humans on the planet to reach 19 November get GTA 6 forty five minutes after Auckland does. Nothing rides on it. It is just a schedule doing something strange to the people at the very front of it.

What the list does not cover, starting with Xbox

Six store regions show no timestamp at all: Bahrain, China, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman and Qatar. Four more, the Philippines, Russia, Serbia and Vietnam, redirect to other countries' stores, so there is nothing to read.

And the large gap: none of this covers Xbox. Microsoft has published no region by region breakdown. Every article this week carrying Xbox unlock times is assuming Xbox mirrors PlayStation. That assumption is reasonable and it is still an assumption, which is a different thing from a schedule.

The New Zealand trick, and how much of it is actually known

On Xbox, you can change the console's location in system settings, and on previous launches that has unlocked digital games at New Zealand midnight. That mechanism is well documented, so it sits at consensus. On PlayStation, purchases are tied to the account's country, so it would take a separate New Zealand PSN account with the game bought on it, which is considerably more than a settings toggle.

Whether any of it works for this specific title is untested, because the game is not out. Rockstar could region lock the unlock, Microsoft could enforce location for one title, or nobody bothers. The bet, flagged as a bet and the lowest tier available, is that it works on day one, because it always has and because policing it costs more than it saves.

Preload, and why this whole thing has a short shelf life

Several outlets have 12 November as the day downloads open, one week before the first unlock. Attribution varies: some read it from the same storefront data, while at least one outlet reports Rockstar as saying preloading begins at local midnight that day. No Rockstar post has been located stating it, so it stays at reported and is treated here as likely rather than probable. Clearing the drive space now costs nothing either way.

If Rockstar posts its own unlock graphic between now and November, every number above gets replaced by one image. That would be the good outcome. Knowing the rough shape of launch night while none of it is guaranteed is normal for this game, and it would be more suspicious if it were not.

What the video covers

  • Where the 15 wave schedule came from, and why that provenance changes its tier
  • The single US timestamp, and where it actually lands in Honolulu and Anchorage
  • A two hour time zone error that spread through the coverage, corrected
  • The Chatham Islands, and the 45 minute offset that puts them first and last at once
  • The ten store regions with no usable data, and the complete absence of Xbox

What we do not know yet

  • Whether Sony or Rockstar changes any timestamp before launch
  • When Xbox unlocks anywhere, since Microsoft has published nothing
  • Whether the New Zealand region trick works for this title

Evidence tier for what the store pages currently say: confirmed, checkable by anyone. For what happens on launch night: reported, since the timestamps can be edited. For the region trick mechanism: consensus, well documented from previous launches. For whether it works on this title: a bet. For the 12 November preload date: reported, read from storefront data rather than announced. Rockstar has confirmed only the release date. See how this site grades evidence.
